U.S. Government to Push e-Recycling, Energy-Efficient Electronics

According to the EPA, U.S. businesses and consumers generate an astonishing 2.5 tons of discarded electronics every year. Because of this, the U.S. government has issued a new policy to push electronics suppliers to provide energy-efficient and easily recycled products.

This article from ITWorld.com explains this new initiative.

The National Strategy for Electronics Stewardship calls for the U.S. General Services Administration to remove electronics that don't meet environmental standards from its list of approved items that agencies can buy.  The GSA will now only approve those products meeting strict Energy Star or Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) standards.

This new strategy also requires U.S. agencies, the nation’s largest single consumer of electronics, to lead by example by buying, reusing, and recycling electronics responsibly. Government officials believe this strategy is not only good for the environment, but also the economy, as it is their hope that this new initiative will create thousands of new jobs nationwide.
