Mobile Internet

While mobile Internet has been around for about 10 years, it has only been in the last couple of years that it's use has become affordable, stable, and fast enough to provide a real alternative to a wired connection. 

In the "old" days of the year 2000 the "Internet" was available on cell phones through a basic web interface but the black and white screens, slow access, and limited web interfaces made them useful in only a few situations.  There was email access but again it was basic at best. 

By 2004, the cell phone had migrated to a point where email was common and "tethering" had evolved allowing you to connect to your laptop or PocketPC through a cable or if you were lucky - the new Bluetooth standard, but it would take another few years before we would find the wireless internet that is common today.

Today's wireless internet is commonly referred to as 3G (aka EV-DO Rev A) which supports speeds up to 3.1Mbits/sec download and 1.8Mbits/sec upload.  Most of the cellular companies offer this type of service and the devices range from cell phones (all with Bluetooth now...) to USB and PCExpress and PCMCIA cards for laptops.  Novatel Wireless has created the My-Fi portable access point which allow sharing this connection using 802.11g wireless for up to 5 users.
